Becoming the Supervisor Land Surveyor at the Lake County Division of Transportation will allow you to direct the activities of a three-person Survey Crew. The position is responsible for planning, processing, managing survey projects, and field operations; preparing various plats for highways, easements, parcels, and legal descriptions; and reviewing consultants' survey plats, legal descriptions, and engineering plans. The position supervises two survey technicians and receives direction from the Construction & Design Departments. 

This is primarily a field position, with regular hours of work Monday through Friday, from 6:30am - 3:00pm, and occasional office work. Working overtime to meet deadlines of your crew's scheduled work may occasionally be necessary although that is preferred to be minimized as possible.


A County Surveyor has many advantages working for government when compared to the private sector.  All work is within Lake County, so no out of town trips to sites or long travel is necessary.  Start and end every day from the Libertyville office.  Employment is year-round working either on Construction layout, Design topography pick up in the field or preparation/review of documents in the office.  This variety of steady work can be very appealing as compared to other employers.  Overtime tends to be far less than in the private sector as you will control the number of projects taken on each season with the additional work delegated to contractors or design firms though contracts.  When necessary, overtime is paid additionally at 1.5X hourly rate.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Direct survey crew to ensure jobs are accurate and completed in a timely manner
  • Calculate road alignments, right-of-way, and boundaries creating survey plats for land acquisition
  • Research records and deeds to determine the correct location of right-of-way and property boundaries
  • Write legal descriptions for parcels to be acquired for right-of-way
  • Operate GPS equipment and robotic total stations to location existing features and topography for project design and construction staking
  • Preserve and perpetuate survey monuments along the County Highway system to comply with state law and County practices
  • All other related duties as assigned

 

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required

 

  • Experience with Trimble survey equipment, MicroStation, GEOPAK, OpenRoads Designer, and lidar scanners is a plus 
  • Experience with 3D modeling is also a plus as our Design Department transitions into this newer way of producing plans 
  • Keep up with latest laws, industry changes, or trends via journals and survey conferences so as to advise other professional staff at LCDOT on future needs and budget

Education and other Requirements

  • Requires bachelor's degree in Land Surveying from an accredited college or university program; or a four-year bachelor's degree in a related science, including at least 24 semester hours of land surveying courses from an Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) approved curriculum of an accredited institution.
  • Possession of a certificate as a Registered Illinois Land Surveyor issued by the IDFPR Registration for the same in the State of Wisconsin is a plus. The position requires the license in order to survey right-of-way lines, property boundaries, prepare plats of survey and to write legal descriptions.
  • Minimum of six years of responsible in charge experience, two of which shall be as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record
     

Physical Requirements

  • Perform moderate work involving walking, standing, stooping and lifting frequently 
  • Ability to lift between 20 and 50 pounds of equipment and materials 
  • Moderate dexterity to use tools in the field, operate survey equipment and office equipment 
  • Able to work in all types of weather conditions and terrain found in Lake County
