Survey Technician

Department: Land Surveying

Location: Green Lake Surveying- Green Lake, WI (On-site)

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Position Overview:

Green Lake Surveying is seeking a dependable and motivated Survey Technician to support a variety of land surveying projects throughout the area. This position is primarily field-based and will assist with collecting accurate survey data, locating property evidence, setting survey points, and supporting the completion of boundary, topographic, construction, and other survey work.

This role does not require project management experience or a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license. However, licensed surveyors and individuals working toward professional licensure are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, pays close attention to detail, works well as part of a crew, and is comfortable using technology and survey equipment.

While the primary focus will be fieldwork, experience or interest in office-based survey support—such as data processing, drafting, research, calculations, and document preparation—is strongly preferred and may provide opportunities for broader responsibilities and professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Survey Work
  • Assist with boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, certified survey map, subdivision, and other land surveying projects.
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment, including total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, levels, and related field tools.
  • Collect accurate field measurements, notes, photographs, and other project information in accordance with established procedures.
  • Search for, identify, and document property corners, monuments, benchmarks, and other survey evidence.
  • Set stakes, hubs, lath, pins, and other survey markers as directed.
  • Perform basic field calculations and verify measurements for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist with equipment setup, calibration checks, charging, cleaning, and general care.
  • Travel to project sites and work safely in varying terrain, weather conditions, construction areas, roadways, and other outdoor environments.
  • Office & Project Support
  • Download, organize, and process field data for review by survey staff.
  • Assist with drafting, mapping, exhibits, legal descriptions, plats, certified survey maps, and other survey-related documents when qualified or trained to do so.
  • Conduct courthouse, municipal, online, and internal record research related to deeds, plats, easements, right-of-way, and previous surveys.
  • Maintain organized field notes, project files, equipment records, and supporting documentation.
  • Communicate field conditions, discrepancies, access concerns, and project needs promptly to the Survey Department Manager or project surveyor.
  • Support survey staff with scheduling, project preparation, document filing, and other departmental needs as assigned.
  • Teamwork & Client Service
  • Work cooperatively with survey crew members, licensed surveyors, CAD technicians, engineers, clients, contractors, property owners, and public officials.
  • Represent Green Lake Surveying professionally while working on private property, public rights-of-way, construction sites, and client locations.
  • Follow company safety practices, project procedures, and quality-control standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to perform primarily outdoor fieldwork and travel locally to project sites.
  • Ability to walk over uneven terrain, carry survey equipment, drive stakes, and work in a range of weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail, dependability, and commitment to accurate work.
  • Basic math, computer, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently when appropriate and effectively as part of a survey crew.
  • Strong, proactive work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous land surveying, construction, engineering, CAD, GIS, mapping, utility, agricultural, or other related field experience.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree, technical diploma, coursework, or training in land surveying, civil engineering technology, geomatics, construction, geography, or a related field.
  • Experience using total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, levels, or other survey technology.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, survey data-processing software, GIS, Microsoft Office, or similar programs.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin survey practices, land records, legal descriptions, plats, deeds, and property research.
  • Ability to assist with both field and office survey functions.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or progress toward licensure. Licensed surveyors are encouraged to apply.
